These are the thriller books that formed my current taste in thrillers. Be warned, I am now a very picky reader and if I push through a book I am not enjoying, it will result in a slump.

freida mcfadden thriller books
  1. Freida McFadden – The Housemaid Series
    • Why I loved it: It got me back into reading as an adult! The books were accessible on Kindle Unlimited
    • When I read it: 2022?
    • Read it if you: Love a good popcorn thriller
    • Skip it if you: Want a really serious thriller with a ton of character development, and something completely unique.
    • I love this series as a popcorn thriller comfort read and I will die on that hill. The novella makes me so happy.
    • Get it
  2. Liane Moriarty – The Husband’s Secret
    • Why I loved it: it was one of the first commercial thriller books I read as an adult
    • When I read it: 2015? right before I went to college
    • Read it if you: like getting torn in half and love a good plot twist
    • Skip it if you: want to avoid sad books in any capacity
    • Get it
  3. Freida McFadden – The Perfect Son
    • Why I loved it: I didn’t see the ending and didn’t expect a boy kid to not be horrid annoying, like it was a good book and the kid was a cool kid
    • When I read it: 2022?
    • Read it if you: Want a good popcorn thriller with a bit of a spookier edge, I think this one did get me a bit
    • Skip it if you: Hyper analyze thriller books for plot holes, this is a brain can relax book. If you are someone who actively guesses and tries to spoil the ending and gets angry when you guess the ending, you might not want this. I had a fun time on the rollercoaster Freida put me on.
    • Get it
  4. John Marrs – The One
    • Why I loved it: Pulled me out of a reading slump and showed me other authors can write good thrillers too
    • When I read it: 2024? on Kindle Unlimited, it was recommended by a book friend
    • Read it if you: Want a thriller that is really fast paced, has a lot of point of views, and is very layered and sucks you in, it will leave an impact
    • Skip it if you: can’t handle thrillers that have a lot of substance to them (i mean this in a nice way, as I have book friends who find agatha christie to be a bit too scary, i think john marrs writes write on the border of horror)
    • Get it
  5. My Sister The Serial Killer Oyinkan Braithwaite
    • Why I loved it: was one of the first books I picked up intentionally trying to read more diversely and was really happy to find a thriller written by a Black woman
    • When I read it: 2024
    • Read it if you: want a thriller that is really good and arent afraid to be torn in half, it gets sad
    • Skip it if you: only really enjoy popcorn thrillers and cozy mysteries as this one is a bit sad
    • Get it
  6. Project Hail Mary (sci fi, thriller is the sub genre) – Andy Weir
    • Why I loved it: it was recommended to me as a sci fi book via youtube so I grabbed it at barnes and noble in 2024 and I was immediately captivated and it altered my brain chemistry, i cannot put into words how much i love this book and why i love it so much, but i actively watch youtube interviews of andy weir in my free time now,
    • When I read it: 2024
    • Read it if you: enjoy sci fi books, books with humor, thrillers, science
    • Skip it if you: HATE sci fi, it is a sci fi book and it is not for everyone, many think the main character is annoying, but i think they are wrong
