The Glass Castle

Tara Westover

This book is a very heavy read. It’s about a girl who grows up with abusive, neglectful parents struggling from poverty and alcoholism.

They live in their car and are constantly trying to find a place to stay – even if only temporary.

Throughout this time, Jeannette, the daughter, is constantly told by her father that he will build her a Glass Castle one day. He already had the plans and everything.

The glass castle for me was a metaphor for broken promises made by bad parents. It wa a distraction method, a potential delusion, brought on by alcoholism, and an effort to lie to the children to get them to go along with the “adventure” they were on.

Jeannette ends up making it out. She goes to college. Of course her parents are upset by this, but she writes this book and gets her story out.

Hang The Moon is another recent release from her that is popular, check out her author profile here on Goodreads.
